Saying it in Style

April 26, 2016 by Bridget Wright

The other day I talked about having professional business cards and how important it is in the business world and in projecting the right image. Well, another point to consider is being able to succinctly say your mission statement in a sentence or two without boring the listener. Think: If someone asked yo what do you do, what would your response be?

Be careful of …uhm’s…aah’s……welllll….seeeee.

That’s an absolute no-no.

Here’s an exercise:
Stand in front of a mirror and say your objective or mission statement to yourself over and over and over until you’re convinced. You should be able to network effectively and successfully by having your mission statement memorized comfortably and accurately.

My mission statement is:

The Daily Exhorter is a communications consulting business designed to facilitate organizations in developing productive and effective communications.

It’s so important to get it right because your brand depends on it. Besides, if you can’t say it to yourself and be sold, why should anyone else believe what you’re saying?

What is Lifestyle Blogging?

February 3, 2016 by Bridget Wright

When I think and talk about the term, “Lifestyle Blogging,” I am specifically talking about blogging as a part of your daily lifestyle, your daily routine. Now I am aware that other people may call it something different, but for me, I’m referring to blogging about what people do as a natural part of their daily lives. This can include things like:

Research (Googling)

Cooking (developing meal plans, tweaking recipes)

Remodeling (DIY home projects)

Fitness (working out, eating healthy)

Cars (restoration, purchasing, etc.)

Just about anything you can think of that you do on a daily basis can be done as a lifestyle blogger. For instance, for me, every day I look forward to two things:

1. Working out, either outside or at the gym, and

2. Working on my passive income business ideas

Now although I’ve freelanced for years as a business writer, I’ve come to completely enjoy writing about my lifestyle and the things that interest me. I’ve been steadily on this journey since 2009, and no matter how many freelance clients I’m managing, I always, ALWAYS come back to my lifestyle interests when I’m in between clients. It was after a few years and a few clients later that I started noticing this trend that was developing. I absolutely love writing, researching, digging, experimenting and figuring out things related to the two things that I love.

I’ve tried to separate my passion from practical application, as in doing something that will bring me a solid income as opposed to writing from my passions. But no matter what, I would always find myself daydreaming about my passions and spending hours and hours Googling and YouTubing stuff related to either health and fitness or passive income. The “do what you love and the money will follow” is a true statement.

As I started noticing that I was spending SO much time on these interests, it only made sense that I should direct my passions towards these things. After all, how could I NOT do that when I could easily spend 4 hours solid on YouTube researching about my 4c natural hair and the science behind it? Yes, that really happened.

So as a lifestyle blogger, talking about the things that interest me are so very easy to do. And, making money by doing it is even easier because I’m doing what I love. It’s like the frustration you feel when you have to do something as opposed to when you want to do something.

Blogging as my lifestyle is not hard at all, and nor should it be for you. You should enjoy what you do and do it with all that you have. Determine that you want to monetize it as a business, and you’re set. If you decide to follow me on this journey, I’ll share with you my tips and knowledge so that we’re all successful. If you’re ready to do this, come on and join me!

How to Turn Customers Into Bloggers

October 4, 2013 by Bridget Wright

What better way is there to market your product or services than to have someone do it for you? I’m specifically talking about letting customers market for you. They do this through word-of-mouth referrals and some even write on their own blogs. Then, there are customers who are avid Facebook and Twitter users who love to share their experiences with their “Friend” community. That’s electric marketing!

Ways to Reward Customers

To get customers to blog and talk about your business, you can hire them as blog writers or reward them with other incentives. Both ways work very well, but the best and most genuine marketing comes from customers who have no vested interest in your company. In other words, they will speak the truth, paid or not, free products or not. It’s actually the best way to see how your company measures up to others in the industry. You may be even to glean ideas on what you can do to improve the company’s image and performance. Yes, customer’s tend to be honest like that.

My Experience as a Paid (?) Blogger

A short while ago, I was an incentive-paid blogger for a local business in my community. It was a place that I frequented and felt that it had so much potential to serve the community in more than one aspect. I approached the owner and we worked out an agreement for me to blog about them on Facebook in return for a free service. Now before I was the blogger for them, I could be completely objective and was full of (un)-solicited advice all day long! However, once I became a part of the staff (in a round-about way), I felt the need to sing their praises in all things, good or bad. It wasn’t what I felt in my heart, but I felt I had to do this because I represented the company in a way. It wasn’t the best situation to work in and we both mutually agreed to end the business relationship. I went back to being a customer and they went back to being a business.

One reason why my situation didn’t work was because the focus was removed on improving the company’s service quality and was placed more on making the company “look good.” Yes, this is important, but it’s way more important to actually have something good to offer than empty words. Also, as a blogger, I wasn’t able to be objective any longer since I was “paid.” Bloggers are always under pressure to deliver and satisfy their clients, no matter what.

Speaking the Truth

Therefore, the ideal marketing situation for customers to blog about your company is to allow them to be themselves and speak their reviews, whichever way they go. Of course you can and should offer incentives, free products or even compensation where you can, but don’t focus on that so much. Be honest with the customers and tell them you want them to write or review your company and give their honest opinions on Facebook, Twitter or the social networking platform of their choice. Track their comments and follow up with comments of your own about their experiences. This makes you look good and makes your company seem genuine.  People always want to do business with companies who don’t mind taking a little constructive criticism and who make efforts to improve their business standards. It all turns out to be a win-win situation.
